Rules of Participation in X-Ultra TihioRace 170K
DECLARATION OF COMPLIANCE
GENERAL: The words noted here refer to specific terms: 1) ATHLETES/ATHLETES to the competitors, that is, those who register and participate in the race 2) ORGANIZATION/RACE COMMITTEE to the Organizing Committee of the race
- PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS
To participate, athletes must:
a. have been born before 2006
b. have finished two mountain races over 80 kilometers during the previous three calendar years 2023-2025 or two ultra-distance races over 100 kilometers.
c. understand and can manage the difficulties of such a race, understand and can manage the exposure to the weather conditions that will prevail on the specific day of the race, have experience (proven) from mountain races, follow the instructions of the organization and volunteers closely, and must be properly prepared and in good health condition.
1.1 The application for participation in the race requires full acceptance of the terms.
- PARTICIPATION
2.1. All participants must be 20 years of age or older.
2.2. Participation is considered valid if it has been financially settled.
2.3. The registration system will be open until Sunday, May 17, 2026 at 12:00 pm, unless an extension of registration is granted by the organizer, which will be announced in a timely manner on social media and on the event website.
2.4. The cost of participation in the 170 km race is: 170€ (Early Bird till the end of December 2026 / 140€). The cost includes accommodation in yurt tent in the amphitheater with amenities, toilets and hot water.
2.4.1. This includes:
• participation in the entire race event, according to the regulations.
• all meals throughout the race
• catering at the Supply Stations
• T-shirt with the race logo or other provision from the organization
• commemorative medal
• transfers of drop bags
• local transportation (Tihio to Stromi for the start and where needed)
• meals after the race
2.5. An athlete who registers and does not attend the race is not entitled to a refund.
- CATEGORIES
The first 3 men and the first 3 women will be awarded prizes.
- RACE DATE:
Χ-Ultra Tihiorace 170km 02 – 6/06/2026
- RACE ROUTE:
5.1. It is described precisely on the event website on the subpage of the Χ-Ultra Tihiorace 170km race (https://en.tihiorace.gr/races/x-ultra-tihiorace) which is an integral part of these regulations.
- COMPLIANCE:
6.1. Athletes are obliged to fully respect the regulations described below. They are also obliged to obey the instructions of the race judges. Failure to comply with the regulations or instructions always entails the penalty of disqualification. The race judges, when confronted with the regulations, record them and inform the violators. Any other authorized person from the organization has the ability to also record a violation in his/her opinion and submit the examination to the Race Committee.
- ROUTE MARKING:
7.1. The route marking is dense with red and white tapes and with mountaineering signs - paint markers, which indicate the correct course of the athlete.
7.2. The route marking placed by the organization is temporary, with the aim of serving the athletes and is removed after the race. These are mainly signs indicating kilometers or guidelines for the route.
7.3. At key points along the route and in case the above materials are deemed sufficient, there will be volunteers who will guide the athletes.
- SAFETY
8.1. Athletes participate at their own risk and the organizing authority is not responsible in case of injury. However, there will be a Volunteer Rescue Team that will cover the race. Also, specialized medical personnel and a fully equipped ambulance will be on standby at selected strategic points.
8.2. Athletes must have recently been examined by a doctor, who will deem them fit to participate in the race.
- TIME LIMITS: 46 hours
9.1. The limits are common for all categories of athletes, regardless of gender and age. After the completion of the time mentioned, the station manager continues to register the athletes but as latecomers, and athletes who arrive there are required to surrender their bib.
- ATHLETE NUMBER:
10.1. All athletes must carry the race number (bib) on them, which is required to have on a visible spot on the front of their shirt. The number must remain on throughout the race without being folded, thus obscuring any information written on the number (sponsors, logos, etc.). Substantial alteration of the number, which may cause confusion to the Station recorders, is punishable by disqualification. Loss of the bib number is punishable by disqualification.
- ASSISTANCE TOOLS:
11.1. The use of hiking poles is permitted. It is also permitted to possess and use a map, compass, GPS, radio (VHF).
- WASTE:
12.1. The race takes place in mountainous terrain and in a sensitive ecosystem. Therefore, it is strictly forbidden to discard any type of object along the route, such as plastic bottles or any other packaging material for solid or liquid food consumed by athletes during the race. At each station there is a special plastic garbage bag. All athletes are required to throw garbage into the bag.
- AID STATIONS:
13.1. The organizing authority undertakes the supply of athletes during the race. The aid stations are:
- 1st Viniani, 27km, food, water, electrolytes, time limit 8h
- 2nd Polydrosos, 60km, food, water, electrolytes, drop bags, sleep, time limit 14h
- 3rd Refuge “Defner”, 85km, food, water, electrolytes, sleep, time limit 24h
- 4th Agia Efthymia, 119km, food, water, electrolytes, drop bags, sleep, time limit 30h
- 5th Vraila, 141km, food, water, electrolytes, sleep, time limit 39h
14. MANDATORY EQUIPMENT, BACKPACKS (Applies to the 170km race)
14.1 Each athlete, for safety reasons, is required to carry his/her backpack with the following mandatory equipment throughout the race:
1. backpack with a minimum one-liter water bottle
2. waterproof jacket
3. aluminum blanket
4. elastic bandage and 2 (two) gauze
5. emergency whistle
6. one headlamp with spare batteries
7. food equivalent to at least 1000 calories
8. mobile phone, with a charged battery. Your phone number must be declared when registering for the race. The organization’s phone numbers will also be listed on the bib number that will be given to the athletes.
9. Depending on the weather conditions, the organization may require additional mandatory equipment, such as gloves, hat, long technical leggings or waterproof trousers.
Upon receipt of the registration form the secretariat, the organization will check the above necessary equipment. The starter pack will not be given to the athlete if any of the above materials are missing.
The organization will check this equipment at an unknown (in advance) point on the route. The absence of any part of the equipment will result in the athlete being disqualified.
14.2 OPTIONAL EQUIPMENT
Optionally, athletes may bring with them: • first aid supplies • GPS device • compass • printed route description • hiking poles • cap • gloves • sunglasses • hat • long leggings or waterproof trousers • second pair of socks
14.3. DROP BAGS (Applies to the 170 km race)
Each athlete in the 170 km race may hand over 2 “drop bags”:
- 1 for the “Polydroso” Aid Station at 60km and
- 1 for the “Ag. Efthymia” Aid Station at 119km.
The athletes drop bags will be delivered to the secretariat before the start of the race and will be of their own choice (preferably made of waterproof material), so that they are durable.
Also, the organization recommends that there is no unnecessary consumption of disposable materials. The bags will contain whatever the athlete himself estimates he will need as support (food, clothing, etc.). It is prohibited to place any sharp object (knives, forks, etc.) inside the bags, in order to avoid any minor accidents or damage to the contents of the bag or to that of other athletes.
The organization undertakes the transport of the "Drop Bags".
The organization is not responsible for any breakage of objects or for the loss of valuables contained in the bags.
- CHECKPOINTS:
15.1. The race checkpoints are at the aid stations and at selected points. Athletes are required to have their race number clearly visible so that the judges can record them. If an athlete is wearing a windbreaker, they must show their race number upon reaching the Aid Station. Refusal to show their race number will result in disqualification. Any athlete who fails to pass even one Aid Station will be considered invalid.
- OBJECTIONS:
16.1. Objections for any reason may only be made by the athlete himself, no later than 2 days after the official results are issued.
- SAFETY:
17.1. The Committee undertakes to supervise the race route with specialized personnel in matters of safety, rescue and provision of medical assistance to athletes who may be in need. In cases where the security personnel and the event officials indicate to the athletes that they must change direction for safety reasons, the athletes are obliged to obey. Refusal to comply means disqualification.
- COURSE MODIFICATION / POSTPONEMENT:
18.1. If necessary (e.g. extremely dangerous weather conditions), the organizers reserve the right to modify the route, postpone the start for a short period of time, change the exclusion limits or interrupt the race at any point in order not to endanger the physical integrity of the athletes.
- RESULTS:
19.1. The official (final) results of the race are made public after the race, after the data has been cross-checked and the necessary checks have been carried out.
19.2. The final classification of the race is the classification provided by the organization. Under no circumstances and for any reason, will double medals be awarded to male and female athletes who will finish together. The only classification criterion is the crossing of the finish line.
- PENALTIES:
20.1. The only penalty imposed for all offenses & violations of the regulations is exclusion/elimination.
20.2. It is imposed for:
• Failure to comply with the rules regarding mandatory equipment
• Contamination of the route,
• Detour of the route
• Inappropriate behavior towards the organization's staff
• Behavior contrary to sports ethics that endangers the organization and other athletes
- DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY:
21.1. The organizers are not responsible for the death, injury or any damage to the health of the athletes, who, by submitting the participation application, declare that they are aware of the risks that exist in the mountainous environment and confirm that their health is good and allows them to compete, and have recently been examined by a doctor for this matter. However, no athlete will be asked to provide a medical certificate. The athletes themselves are obliged to undergo regular medical check-ups in order to monitor their health. The organizers disclaim any responsibility for the physical integrity of the athletes, who must behave responsibly at points on the route where the risk of falling with unpleasant or fatal consequences is increased. - COPYRIGHTS:
22.1. The organization and its partners retain the copyright of the photography and filming of the race by authorized teams that undertake this work. Each athlete whose application for participation is accepted automatically accepts this condition, knowing that his face may appear in photographs or videos, without being asked for permission and without being able to claim any compensation from any publication of the material.
- AMENDMENT OF RULES:
23.1. The organizers reserve the right to amend the competition regulations, without the obligation to individually inform each athlete. Only on the official website of the competition.
